Wendy’s makes U-turn on discontinued menu item after fan uproar

Wendy’s is bringing back its discontinued Sweet and Sour sauce after customers begged for its return.

Fans took note when the condiment was quietly taken off the fast-food chain’s menu in September, demanding for it to be brought back. In a December Instagram post, Wendy’s confirmed that the Sweet and Sour sauce would eventually return by posting a meme about the constant customer request.

Finally, in a Monday press release, Wendy’s revealed that the dip was available again in U.S. restaurants.

“Thousands of social media comments. Countless posts and tags. An undeniable wave of fan passion demanding one thing: the return of Wendy’s Sweet and Sour dipping sauce,” the company wrote.

However, Wendy’s noted in a recent Instagram post that the sauce would only be back for a limited time — unless customers “get loud.”

“Go get the sauce in-restaurant + like, comment and share this post to save it. SWEET & SOUR ARMY DO UR THING,” the brand wrote on Instagram earlier this week.

Fans urged Wendy’s to make the sauce a permanent menu item, with one writing in the comments: “Limited time???? Did you not learn!”

“I legit stopped eating at Wendy’s when this was taken away. I will now go back but only if it stays,” another added.

Wendy’s also enlisted social media creator Jaz Smith, who raved about the dipping sauce last year, to announce its return. “No dream is too big,” she said. “We asked for Sweet and Sour sauce and Wendy’s delivered!”

In a viral TikTok video, posted in October, Smith expressed her disappointment about the product being discontinued. “I think Wendy’s has the best sweet and sour, and I’m appalled that they would do such a thing. So this is my plea to Wendy’s to bring back Sweet and Sour,” she said.

Along with Sweet and Sour, Wendy’s has six dipping sauces: Wendy’s Signature, Sweet Chili, Scorchin’ Hot, Creamy Ranch, Honey BBQ and Honey Mustard.

The return of beloved condiment comes after Wendy’s embarked on a significant restructure, with a renewed focus on value deals. In February, Wendy’s shared its plans to attract “inflation-weary customers” through more competitive pricing, after a disappointing fourth-quarter performance.

Ken Cook, Wendy’s chief financial officer, stated in an investor call: “One learning from 2025 around value, we swung the pendulum too far towards limited-time price promotions instead of everyday value.”

The company has already launched a permanent “Biggie Deals” value menu, featuring three price points: $4 Biggie Bites, $6 Biggie Bags and an $8 Biggie Bundle.
