Patrick Beverley’s lawyer says to ‘not rush to judgement’ after 15-year-old sister accuses him of choking and punching her

    -

Patrick Beverley’s 15-year-old sister told police that the NBA veteran choked, slammed, punched and threatened to kill her before his arrest on Friday, according to the probable cause affidavit. His attorney claims that her description of events is inaccurate and incomplete.

The affidavit was obtained by multiple outlets on Tuesday, including Lauren Conlin of Los Angeles Magazine.

According to the affidavit, Beverley’s sister claimed she snuck out of their home to meet her boyfriend, who is reportedly 18 years old. When she came back, her mother Lisa was awake and allegedly told her to call her boyfriend and tell him to come to the house, then also had Patrick come to the house and meet his sister in her bedroom.

Once everyone was there, Patrick allegedly began to lecture his sister about sneaking out, then grabbed her neck with both hands and picked her up off the ground, the the point her feet were off the floor. He allegedly kept choking her for 20 to 30 seconds, then took her out of the bedroom while still holding her neck and slammed her against the wall.

The sister claims she tried to loosen Patrick’s grip on her neck, at which point Patrick allegedly laid her down on a sofa and punched her in the left eye, then made a statement in which he claimed “he will be the family relative to kill her.”

Lisa allegedly remained in the bedroom, then told the boyfriend to leave, with Patrick following him. It was at that point the boyfriend called law enforcement. The police officer on the scene says in the affidavit they noticed markings on the sister’s neck and petechia (i.e. spots of blood) in the white part of her eyes.

Beverley was arrested on a charge of assault family violence/household impeding breath, a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison.

The 37-year-old was denying the allegations even before they came to light days later, counseling his followers to “not believe everything you see on the internet” soon after his arrest and releasing a statement saying he has no criminal record, “cares deeply about his little sister” and that he was “understandably concerned” when he found her alone with an 18-year-old man, a claim which clashes with the police’s accounting of events.

On Tuesday, his attorney released the following statement to Yahoo Sports pleading for the public to not rush to judgement:

“I understand that the affidavit contains some negative details; however, remember that it is only one side of the story – given at a time when emotions were high. As I’ve said before, we don’t believe that the description in that affidavit is accurate, nor is it complete. Patrick is not a violent man and was not violent that night. In fact, he was very respectful with the authorities that night and encouraged others to do the same.

“He is the provider and protector of his family, including his little sister and his mom. He has always looked out for their wellbeing and will continue to do so. I have every expectation that when all the facts are in, Patrick will be cleared of these charges. Until then, I can only ask that everyone keep an open mind and not rush to judgment. Please remember this is America and in our society, Patrick is innocent unless proven otherwise in a court of law.”

Beverley hasn’t played in an NBA game since May 2, 2024 when he was with the Milwaukee Bucks. That game saw him get involved in an altercation with Indiana Pacers fans in which he hit a woman in the head with a ball, asked for the ball back from another fan, then whipped it back at him in the final minutes of a one-sided game.

That incident resulted in the NBA suspending Beverley four games, which he has yet to serve, and the Pacers fans filing a lawsuit against him with claims of “physical pain,” emotional distress, “humiliation, embarrassment and anguish,” medical expenses and lost wages.

Beverley hasn’t officially retired yet, though he’s devoted most of his time in public to his podcast, which saw him get into a feud with Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson just last week over comments he made about his relationship with Megan Thee Stallion.
