Jennifer Hudson got the sweetest early Mother’s Day surprise during the May 7 episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show.
The singer and talk show host became emotional after 16-year-old son, David Jr., walked on stage carrying a homemade pound cake.
Hudson had no idea he was backstage.
“David!” she said as she stood up to hug him. “Y’all got me again.”
David revealed that he made the cake himself using a family recipe that has become part of their holiday tradition.
“This is your mom’s special recipe, so I made it for Mother’s Day. I love you,” he told her.
Hudson later explained that the pound cake recipe originally came from her own mother and has been passed down through the family for birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations.
“My mother always made this pound cake,” she shared. “For Mother’s Day, birthdays, all special occasions, he always makes it for me.”
The sweet moment quickly turned emotional as Hudson realized why her son had been keeping his distance earlier in the day.
“He said he was coming here today, and I’m like, ‘David ain’t got here,’” she said. “Then to hear you come out here, you done baked the cake.”
Hudson shares David with her former fiancé, attorney and former WWE star David Otunga Sr. The former couple got engaged in 2008 and welcomed their son in 2009 before separating in 2017.
In 2024, Hudson opened up about how quickly her son has grown up. During an interview with Essence, she joked that one day he suddenly looked completely different after a nap.
“He went to sleep in the room, took a nap with his mohawk, and when I tell you he came out, had a whole new nose, and shot up,” she said. “I was like, ‘Where did my child go? Who is this?’”
Hudson also spoke about adjusting to each new stage of parenting as her son gets older.
“Each phase of raising a kid is different from the last,” she explained. “So, it’s like, Okay, how do you need me now? How do I parent you now with where you are right now? So, we’re finding a new norm, and I’m preparing him for what’s to come.”
