Sheridan Smith is set to light up the West End this Christmas, in a revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s Woman in Mind.
Scheduled to open Tuesday, December 9th 2025, the psychological comedy will run for a limited season at the Duke of York’s Theatre in central London, marking Smith’s return to the venue following her triumphant run in Shirley Valentine last year.
Directed by former Donmar Warehouse artistic director Michael Longhurst (Next to Normal), and produced by Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions, the play will see Sheridan play the role of Susan, an unhappy Vicar’s wife who imagines the perfect life for herself where her family and career line-up perfectly.
Following its stint in London, the show will visit Sunderland Empire from March 4th to March 7th 2026 and Theatre Royal, Glasgow from March 10th to March 14th 2026.

Alan Ayckbourn’s Woman in Mind first premiered in 1985 at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, before transferring to London’s West End in 1986. It marked a turning point in Ayckbourn’s career, showcasing a darker and more psychologically complex style than his earlier comedies.
The play follows Susan, a neglected housewife, whose retreat into a vivid fantasy life gradually blurs with reality. Notable for being told entirely from Susan’s perspective—including moments where the audience sees the world as she perceives it—the play was praised for its inventive structure and emotional depth, cementing its reputation as one of Ayckbourn’s most powerful and innovative works.
