SOUTH BEND — The lightning delay between Purdue football and Notre Dame created an awkward timing decision.
The stoppage came with the 1:31 remaining in the first half. The Boilermakers trailed 28-13, but had retaken possession on a Myles Slusher strip-sack of CJ Carr. Purdue faces second-and-10 at the 19 when play resumes.
So does that mean the teams will play 91 seconds of game clock, then return to their locker rooms for a full halftime? The game has been delayed since 5:06 p.m.
The answer is no. Notre Dame announced this break will serve as the halftime break. There will be a typical quarter transition between the second and third quarters.
“Hopefully we don’t have to do that,” Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said earlier on the NBC broadcast. “… My suggestion, let’s treat this as a halftime and treat halftime like the end of the quarter. Change of possession and let’s go.”
According to NBC, the teams are hoping to be back on the field around 6:15 p.m., with play to resume 15 minutes after that.
This is the second straight week Purdue has dealt with a weather delay. The start of last week’s home game against USC was delayed over three hours.
