The best and worst college football Week 1 Saturday moments

    -

The first official week of the college football season is in the books, as Alabama fans mourn losing to Florida State and Texas fans watch 2024 Arch Manning highlights to cope with Saturday’s game.

This week really got the season started off with plenty of intrigue and plenty to talk about, even if August can make hot-take artists out of us all.

ALABAMA FOOTBALL: Is Kalen DeBoer on the hot seat after the Florida State loss?

We said goodbye to College GameDay‘s Lee Corso this week after decades of headgear picks and wonderful analysis. We also watched Ohio State defend its national title in style and gained a new appreciation for the justifiable cockiness of Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos.

As we reflect on the college football week that was, we’ve rounded up the five best and five worst moments from the first official Saturday of the season. Happy trails, Coach Corso, and not so fast, my friends.

Boy, we’re going to miss Corso on the College GameDay dais. At least he went out on top!

WORST: Arch Manning not connecting with Ryan Wingo on third down in crunch time against Ohio State

However, Manning and Texas will be okay. Let’s give the young fella a break. He just needs to time to get settled.

Sure, this guy watched his team lose to Florida State, but he also became an internet legend in an instant.

WORST: This ominous storm cloud descending upon Texas Tech

OK, that’s not a storm cloud. That’s Jean Jacket from Nope. What’s a bad miracle?

Puddles is beloved, but losing your mascot head is always high entertainment.

WORST: The whole “faking injures” thing might be back

We imagine the college football referees will be on high alert after the Syracuse-Tennessee game — maybe teams too with the new rules this year.

BEST: Devin Hester Jr. making a huge kick return for Furman

This was great… but, sadly, he’s not related to THAT Devin Hester. Bummer.

WORST: People not ready for another “Manning face” meme

Sorry, folks. The “Manning face” meme has taken new form. Prepare to see it a lot.

BEST: This New Mexico offensive lineman bailing out of a scuffle vs. Michigan

You’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em, know when to walk away and know when to run.

    That’s life!
