Skylar Diggins records first career triple-double while leading Storm to blowout win over Sun

    -

Skylar Diggins joined an elite group on Monday night while leading the Seattle Storm to a dominant win over the Connecticut Sun.

The Storm veteran put up her first career triple-double in the Storm’s 101-85 win over the Sun. Diggins finished with 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in the win at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. She had nine of her assists in the first half, too, which matched her career high for a half and set a new season-best across the WNBA.

Diggins is now just the second Storm player in franchise history to record a triple-double, joining Temeka Johnson back in 2014. She’s also the fourth player in the league to record a triple-double this season.

Diggins only needed three quarters to actually pull off the triple-double. She secured it with a free throw in the final minute of the third quarter, which set the Storm bench off in a massive celebration.

Diggins entered Monday’s game averaging 17.2 points and 5.6 assists per contest this season, her second with the Storm. The 34-year-old picked up her seventh-career All-Star nod this season, too. While it doesn’t count, Diggins actually recorded the first triple-double in All-Star Game history in Indianapolis earlier this month.

Diggins’ triple-double on Monday night was just the 46th in WNBA history. Alyssa Thomas has the most in league history with 16, and she’s the only player to ever record multiple in the postseason. Only eight players have ever recorded multiple in their careers, too. Thomas, Chicago Sky star Angel Reese and Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark are the other three players who have hit this feat so far this season.

The win pushed the Storm to 16-11 on the season, and gave them their second win in four games coming out of the All-Star break. The Sun, who snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over the Golden State Valkyries on Sunday, hold a league-worst 4-21 record.
