Sean McVay on what he’s seen from Jaguars under Liam Coen

    -

Rams’ HC Sean McVay recently shared what he’s seen from Liam Coen as the Jaguars’ head coach.

There will be a lot of familiarity in this week’s Jacksonville Jaguars vs. LA Rams matchup.

Before James Gladstone took over as the Jaguars’ GM, he worked in the LA front office since 2016 under Rams’ GM Les Snead.

Head coach Liam Coen had two stints in LA under Sean McVay. The first was from 2018-2020 as the assistant wide receivers coach and then assistant quarterbacks coach.

Coen then returned in 2022 as a non-play-calling offensive coordinator.

Ahead of Sunday’s game, McVay recently shared what he saw from Coen when the two worked together.

“I think Liam is a great leader,” said McVay, via SI. “He’s a great communicator. He sees the game through a big picture lens.

McVay continued, “I think there was a lot of growth for us personally and professionally. I think he’s used that to be able to use some of those scars, if you will, to be stronger. I think you look at the way that his team has played through five weeks, it’s fun to be able to watch him. I’m happy for him except for when we see them in a few weeks.”

Both Gladstone and Coen have shared how their time in the Rams’ organization has impacted their careers. Coen considers himself a part of the McVay coaching tree, with there being quite a bit of overlap between the Jaguars and Rams’ offensive schemes.

The run game is an important element when it comes to making these offenses go. The pre-snap motion and constant variation of looks throw a lot at opposing defenses.

You can certainly see the influence that Rams’ organization has had on the new-look Jaguars under Gladstone and Coen.

“I think it’s authentic,” McVay said of Coen. “I think he’s passionate. You can see that quarterback background. He’s fiery, but he also knows when to be able to stay steady. I think he picks and chooses his spots accordingly. But I think the most important thing is authenticity. That’s exactly what he’s been.”
