IDA – It was difficult to grip the baseball at Ida.
That wasn’t a problem for the home team.
Three Blue Streak pitchers combined on a 2-hit shutout in an 8-0 season-opening victory over Erie Mason on Monday, March 23.

Owen Snyder tossed the first three innings with six strikeouts. Hunter Hemelgarn handled the next three frames with five whiffs, then Carter Derian finished with a pair of punchouts in the final frame.

With temperatures in the low 40s, the Ida defenders were thankful that their hurlers were efficient, walking just 3 against 13 strikeouts.
“They were great all day long, all three of them,” Ida coach Jimmy McMonagle said. “Derian only threw nine pitches and all of them were strikes.”
The sun starts to peek through the clouds as Hunter Hemelgarn hits for Ida during an 8-0 victory over Erie Mason on Monday, March 23, 2-26.
Ida’s opener probably would have been called off if it had been scheduled as a doubleheader.

“It was cold,” McMonagle said. “We played pretty well for as cold as it was. Since it was just a single game, we figured we would bear through it.”
Hemelgarn went 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs to lead the offense. Jacob Towne also had two hits.
Ida is coming off a 26-10 season.
“The boys played really clean baseball,” McMonagle said. “We return a lot guys from Regional-title-game-appearance team. We’re going to be able to field it. As long as we throw strikes and figure out a way to score some runs, we’re going do pretty well.”
Brody Koehl and Donnelly had the Mason hits.
