Pakistan faced a tough start in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against New Zealand at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi on Wednesday, as they not only lost the match but also registered an unwanted record.

Chasing a challenging target of 321, Pakistan’s top-order struggled under New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack. By the end of the first 10 overs, Pakistan had managed only 22 runs for the loss of two wickets, setting a new record for the team’s lowest-ever total in an ODI powerplay at home.

This record-breaking low came seven years after Pakistan’s previous lowest powerplay score, also against New Zealand in 2018, when they could only manage nine runs during field restrictions.

New Zealand, on the back of brilliant centuries from Tom Latham and Will Young, posted a total of 320-5 in their 50 overs. Pakistan, despite a spirited chase, were bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs, handing New Zealand a 60-run victory in the opening match of the tournament.

The result spoiled Pakistan’s historic return to hosting global events after three decades. The match was attended by thousands of fans, including President Asif Ali Zardari, marking Pakistan’s first International Cricket Council event since 1996.
