When the Dallas Cowboys embarrassed the New York Jets Sunday, 37-22 in the Week 5 contest, breaking a two-game winless streak wasn’t enough for Jerry Jones. Instead of winning graciously, the owner decided to get one more jab in by flipping the bird to a fan from his perch.
Jones had to know he would be asked about it, and he fumbled his explanation during his weekly interview on 105.3 The Fan, claiming he put up the wrong finger. The NFL wasn’t buying what Jones was selling, fining the owner $250,000 for the obscene gesture on Tuesday.
People make mistakes, but it’s a stretch that Jones mistook his middle finger for his thumb. The two digits aren’t normally mistaken for one another and it’s more plausible that Jones meant what he did, he just got caught. Jones, of all people, should know there’s always someone watching.
Jones might have known the discipline was coming and tried to downplay the incident, but to no avail. No matter the intent, the Cowboys’ owner threw the bird at a fan, and the league threw one right back at Jones.
Never a dull moment with the NFL and Jerry Jones.
