MBB Live Thread: Mizzou hosts Texas in most pivotal game of the season

    -

    First Half

    • After video review, Phillips Jr. was assessed a deadball technical foul after slightly elbowing Vokietatis following a rebound attempt. Pope makes one of two free throws. Texas leads 5-4 with 17:26 left.

    • On the ensuing offensive possession, Phillips Jr. picks up another foul for extending his arm too far onto Vokietatis

    • Stone just punched one on Vokietatis. Mizzou Arena exploded. Tigers lead 11-7 with 14:14 remaining.

    • Simeon Wilcher knocks down a 3-pointer from the left wing over Nicholas Randall. Randall switched onto Wilcher too late, and Wilcher made him pay. Mizzou still leads 12-10 with 12:23 remaining.

    • Mizzou leads 18-14 with 7:38 remaining. This has been a very physical game down low. Fouls on the floor have been called on both Mizzou and Texas near the basket. Vokietatis has been a part of seemingly every mini-fracas inside.

    • Stone buries a deep 3-pointer from the top of the key to put Mizzou ahead 27-26 with 3:49 remaining. Stone and Mitchell have combined for 19 points thus far.

    • HALFTIME: Texas 33, Mizzou 31. An and-one layup from Mark over Barrett puts the Longhorns ahead after the first 20 minutes of action.

    • Quick takeaways: Mitchell (12 points) has largely been able to get what he’s wanted down low, especially with Vokietatis on the bench for the home stretch of the first half. But outside of him and Stone (eight points), offense has been hard to come by for the Tigers. Pierce has been effective on the glass and on defense (four rebounds and a block). Texas has done a good job of mucking up the paint on defense, as Mizzou is just 3-of-10 on layups.

    Second Half

    • Texas leads 41-39 with 15:04 remaining. Vokietatis is back in the game and has been causing a LOT of trouble inside. He locked arms with Phillips Jr., and the latter was called for his third foul of the game. Nicholas Randall just put down a two-handed dunk off a steal from Barrett, which was followed by Stone forcing a backcourt violation.

    • Anthony Robinson II picks up his third foul with 13:04 remaining. Swain makes both free throws to put Texas ahead 48-43.

    • Phillips Jr. picks up his fourth foul with 11:33 left. In the first nine minutes and 27 seconds of the second half, there have been 13 fouls called.

    • Robinson II was called for his fourth foul of the game with 9:16 remaining, as he ran into a Vokietaitis screen and reached in for a foul (I guess?). Upon further review, Wilcher also backhanded Robinson in the face while being fouled. Wilcher knocked down two free throws, and Stone made two technical free throws on the other end. Texas leads 59-50.

    • You might want to save your Melatonin for later. We could be here for a long while.

    • Texas has canned 3-pointers on consecutive possessions and leads 67-55 with 6:46 remaining. The Longhorns have outscored the Tigers 19-10 since a pair of Robinson II free throws cut UT’s lead to three with 12:43 left.

    • Vokietaitis picks up his fourth foul with 5:44 remaining

    • Texas leads 73-60 with 4:59 remaining. A lot of air has been taken out of Mizzou Arena in recent minutes. Lots of people are heading for the exits. The Tigers gave up consecutive open looks at the rim, and the Longhorns made them pay.

    Pregame Updates

    • The start of today’s game has been delayed to 7:50. An in-arena announcement said the change is due to traffic on I-70 delaying essential game personnel.
