This week’s Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week award is returning to the soccer pitch as spring action heats up.
Liberty Common girls soccer player Miriam Huffsmith took top honors in the Fort Collins area for the week of March 10-15 with a big-time scoring surge.
Huffsmith had five goals and an assist, accounting for all six goals in the Eagles’ 6-1 win over Regis Groff last week.
The sophomore has picked up where she left off from her freshman season, when she scored 27 goals with 6 assists despite not joining varsity until several games into the year.
The attacking forward/midfielder already has 6 goals and 2 assists through four games this season, again one of Liberty Common’s top offensive options.
Huffsmith (who plays basketball for the Eagles) is also a club standout, playing for the Northern Colorado Lighting U16 girls squad.
Huffsmith is the first Liberty Common athlete to win the award this school year, though it’s a repeat honor after also earning Blue FCU Athlete of the Week recognition last season.
Eagles fans showed out at the polls, earning Huffsmith the win with an overwhelming majority of the vote at 75.8%.
That was more than enough to earn Athlete of the Week over these other worthy nominees:
- Bradley Mallette, Rocky Mountain baseball (runner-up with 20.7%)
- Madden Smiley, Windsor boys basketball
- Mika Mason, Poudre girls soccer
- Vedant Sharma, Fossil Ridge baseball
The Blue Federal Credit Union Athlete of the Week series features five nominees every Monday, with voting at Coloradoan.com until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday and the winner named Thursday.
Fans can nominate their favorite athletes (deadline: 11:59 p.m. every Sunday), and the Coloradoan Sports staff will ultimately select the nominees each week.
If you have nominations for a future Athlete of the Week, please send them via email to ChrisAbshire@coloradoan.com for consideration.
