How Texas A&M’s win over Notre Dame could spark success in recruiting

    -

While Texas A&M’s 41-40 victory over No. 8 Notre Dame in Week 3 was important for the program’s hopes of reaching this year’s College Football Playoff, it was also significant in showing recruits that Bryan-College Station, Texas, is the place to be.

The No. 12 offensive tackle in Texas shouted that message loud and clear with his statement following the magical night in South Bend, Indiana. Four-star 2027 prospect Ismael Camara received an offer from the Aggies during head coach Mike Elko’s first year at the helm in 2024, and for good reason. The 6-foot-5, 340-pounder from Gilmer has already earned 27 offers from programs like Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, Colorado and many others.

As exhilarating as it was for Elko and company to knock off the Fighting Irish in a hostile environment, the game-winning drive scored major points for recruits across the nation like Camara. Here is what the No. 10 tackle in the 2027 class said after the Aggies secured the school’s first non-conference win over a top-10 opponent since 1979:

“You just kind of knew the whole game that the guys were just going to find a way. And seeing the passion from Coach Elko was awesome,” Camara said.

Elko’s passion on the gridiron has been amplified on the recruiting trail. During the summer, he made a massive imprint in securing commits from some of the top-ranked athletes from coast to coast. According to 247Sports’ 2026 Recruit Football Team Rankings, Texas A&M has the No. 5 class in college football. The Aggies also hold the No. 13 class for 2027, which could dramatically increase if the 2025 squad in College Station continues to impress recruits like Camara.

The road to the playoffs will not be handed to them with a Maroon and White bow wrapped around it, however. Head coach Hugh Freeze will lead the Auburn Tigers into Kyle Field on a mission to topple the Aggies for the second consecutive season, while moving one step closer to competing for the SEC title.

If Texas A&M garners more success throughout the treacherous league schedule, the recruiting trail could become even more on fire for Elko and the Aggies moving forward.
