Giants’ John Harbaugh reportedly eyeing Dolphins coach for DC role

John Harbaugh is set to become the head coach of the New York Giants and he’s wasting no time getting to business. According to Connor Hughes of SNY, Harbaugh is eyeing Anthony Weaver as a top choice to be his defensive coordinator.

It’s not a surprising connection given Weaver spent three seasons on Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens staff. Weaver was the team’s defensive line coach and run game coordinator in 2021, and served as assistant head coach and defensive line coach in 2022 and 2023.

There are a couple obstacle in Harbaugh’s path, though.

For one, there are multiple teams entertaining Weaver as a head coach option. The 45-year-old coach interviewed for the Ravens’ and Atlanta Falcons’ vacancies, and is scheduled to interview with the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers too. Weaver probably won’t be in a hurry to take another defensive coordinator position until he knows he’s no longer in the running for any of those four jobs.

And if the Dolphins finish their head coaching search before any of those teams, the new coach in Miami may want to retain Weaver. The Dolphins have the right to block a coach from interviewing for a lateral move elsewhere.

In Weaver’s first season with the Dolphins, the team finished No. 4 in yards allowed. But the team disappointed in 2025 and finished with the No. 22 defense.

If Weaver accepts a head coaching job, the Dolphins would be in line for third-round picks in the 2026 and 2027 NFL Drafts as compensation due to the NFL’s Rooney Rule.
