‘Four Kings’ documentary to be aired on Amazon Prime in September

    -

TWO of the biggest British fights of the 1990s are to be the subject of a new documentary on Amazon Prime.

‘Four Kings’ will air on Friday, September 27 and looks at Lennox Lewis vs. Frank Bruno and the Chris Eubank-Nigel Benn rematch.

In an eight-day period between October 1, 1993 and October 9, 1993 Britain was the centre of the boxing world with Cardiff Arms Park in Wales and Old Trafford in Manchester playing host to the events which featured four different personalities.

The two-minute trailer for the four-part documentary was published online yesterday and begins with Eubank, Lewis, Benn and Bruno all taking their seats ready to share their memories.

“If I am world champion then how can I not be crazy, because a normal mind can’t do it,” says Eubank.

The Amazon press release says that Four Kings ‘Provides unprecedented access to the boxers and their families, chronicling their highs and lows as they navigated fame, fortune, jealousy, and bitter rivalries and battled each other for their place on the throne.’

Lennox Lewis was defending his WBC Heavyweight title for a second time when he and Bruno crossed paths in Cardiff. Bruno was a British sporting treasure who was loved by the public while Lewis had yet to feel the love of the country he was born in but spoke with a North American accent having moved to Canada when he was 12.

Lewis vs. Bruno was the first time, however, that two British born boxer fought for one of the four world titles in the modern era. Bruno, who never possessed the amateur pedigree of his rival, was the nearly man of British boxing having already challenged for a world title on two occasions but lost to Tim Witherspoon and Mike Tyson.

Eubank and Benn shared a fiercer rivalry having first fought one another at the Resorts World Arena, Birmingham in November 1990. The result went Eubank’s way by ninth round stoppage in a memorable encounter but their disdain for one another had barely registered.

The ‘Four Kings’ documentary also explores the effect of mental health struggles in their lives and the impact it had on them inside and outside the ring. Lewis, Bruno, Eubank and Benn each have their own legacy and the next generation of boxing fans will learn about them because of their reputations and achievements.

Boxing is a sport rich in history, stories, characters and drama which lends itself well to documentaries. If the trailer is anything to go by then ‘Four Kings’ could be another piece of essential viewing to go alongside ‘The Kings’, ‘Tapia’, ‘Legendary Nights’, ‘Kings of the Ring’, ‘When We Were Kings’ and others.
