The Atlanta Falcons are signing former New England Patriots kicker John Parker Romo to their practice squad, per a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Tuesday.
Romo was assigned to the Patriots’ practice squad last December, and he signed a reserve/future contract with the organization in January. He never kicked in a game for the Patriots, but he did push rookie sixth-round draft pick Andres Borregales for the starting job in training camp.
Borregales went two-of-three on field goals when making his debut for the Patriots in Week 1 against the Las Vegas Raiders. The team’s decision to keep the rookie over a talented veteran kicker like Romo will likely be revisited in the future.
The Patriots are looking for answers in several areas, including special teams.
The hope is that Borregales can develop into a franchise kicker over time. The potential is obviously there for a player many considered one of the best kickers in the country during his run at the University of Miami.
