Diamondbacks OF Lourdes Gurriel carted off with apparent knee injury after fall in matchup vs. Rangers

    -

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was carted off the field on Monday night after he went down with an apparent non-contact knee injury.

Gurriel was working to track down a deep shot from Texas Rangers first baseman Rowdy Tellez in the sixth inning on Monday in Arizona. Fellow outfielder Blaze Alexander beat Gurriel to the ball and actually made an incredible diving catch to end the inning. But as Alexander went to dive, Gurriel planted hard on his right knee in an effort to get out of the way.

His knee wobbled hard, which sent him crashing down to the outfield into a ball. He remained down for quite some time with his head in his hands as teammates and training staff rushed over to help. Gurriel was eventually carted off the field.

Further specifics of his injury are not yet known.

Gurriel entered Monday night with a .249 batting average with 19 home runs and 80 RBIs this season, his third with the Diamondbacks. Arizona carried a 68-70 record into the game, which has them in fourth in the NL West race. They are six games back from the final wild-card spot in the league, too, and are currently on pace to miss the playoffs for a second straight year.
