2025 outlook:
Hmm, maybe it might be a bigger role than first anticipated. There are a lot of young names at cornerback, and it sounds like Newcombe is trying to make sure he’s in the running.
Each practice, you hear just a little bit more about Newcombe. About his competitive fire and ability to make plays.
This is a big season for Newcombe because there are so many young guys so everything is on the table. You don’t go into Aug. 30 knowing who the two starting cornerbacks are.
Newcombe may or may not be that guy. But he’s going to have all the chances during this preseason camp to attempt to make something special happen.
2025 cornerback outlook
Stay healthy, period. OK, that’s simplifying things too much, but it has been an issue. Whether it’s something known like what has gone with Gentry Williams. Or just the lingering issue with Eli Bowen ever since spring. OU didn’t get aggressive in the transfer portal to land an experienced cornerback. So that puts a lot of pressure on some younger guys to grow up quickly. There are a lot of options for guys to come in and make their mark. A big season as well for cornerbacks coach Jay Valai to show he can get his guys playing at an elite level.
