Yesterday we took a look at the Dallas Cowboys odds of returning to the post-season in the 2025 NFL season. There wasn’t a lot of confidence in the Cowboys getting back to the playoffs, and we also noted how some teams who, on paper, would seem to be inferior teams, actually had better odds of making the playoffs.
We wondered at the time if the division the Cowboys play in was a major factor in that. It turns out that is likely playing a role. Because while the Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots had better odds to make the playoffs, the Cowboys have better odds of winning the Super Bowl than those two teams. Essentially the Cowboys will have a harder time getting into the playoffs, but if they do, they are a better bet to go all the way. To be clear, the odds are low on this, but we’re just making the point
The Cowboys play in a division with the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, and the NFC runner-up Washington Commanders. Meanwhile, the AFC East and the AFC South are pretty bad divisions overall. So we can take some solace that were are thought of as a better team than those other two.
But the down side to these odds is that the Cowboys are +4500 to win the Super Bowl. That puts them pretty close to the middle of the pack among NFL teams. The Jaguars are +7000 and the Patriots are +7500. So the Cowboys payout is lower because the oddsmakers think they have a better shot than the other two teams if they were to make the playoffs. (BTW, if you have any confusion about these odds, check this simple explanation out).
Among their NFC East rivals, the Eagles are tied with the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens with the best odds at a payout of +700. The Commanders are tied with the Los Angeles Rams with the fifth-best odds at +2000. The New York Giants are a whopping +22500.
