Connor McDavid holds ‘a special place’ for Canada coach Jon Cooper

    -

Team Canada and Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper made his admiration for Connor McDavid clear ahead of Saturday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.

Their bond formed during the 2026 Winter Olympics, where Cooper coached, and McDavid led on the ice. Team Canada entered the tournament as a favorite and delivered strong performances throughout. However, the team fell short in the gold medal game against the United States, settling for silver.

Despite that result, McDavid’s impact stood out. He earned tournament MVP honors and secured a place on the Olympic All-Star Team. He also set records with his scoring, producing 13 points and delivering consistent high-level performances in every game, apart from the gold medal game.

Speaking through reporter Gene Principe, Cooper said McDavid holds a special place in his heart.

“Connor’s got a special place in my heart,” Cooper said. “It’s been a pleasure coaching Canada. It sucked(not winning a gold medal) for all of us, but especially for McDavid.”

The experience strengthened their professional connection despite the disappointing finish.

Cooper relied heavily on McDavid’s speed and vision to drive the offense. He was initially an assistant captain but was named the captain following Sidney Crosby‘s injury. He led a top line that controlled games, and his leadership was central as Canada pushed through the knockout rounds.

Connor McDavid is leading the league

Back in the NHL, McDavid continues to lead Edmonton with 115 points this season. The Oilers remain one of the league’s top offensive teams, though defensive inconsistency and unreliable goaltending have been their concern.

As they meet again on opposite benches, respect remains strong. Cooper’s words reflect not just performance, but the lasting impression McDavid made on Canada’s bench.
