Commanders WR Deebo Samuel will fear a familiar number

    -

The Commanders will have a different player wearing No. 1 for the 2025 season.

Noah Igbinoghene, a cornerback who came to Washington for the 2024 season to rejoin head coach Dan Quinn and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr, wore No. 1 last season. Igbinoghene had been with Quinn and Whitt in Dallas for a single season (2023) and signed as free agent to play in the Commanders secondary last season, and chose to wear jersey No. 1 after wide receiver Jahan Dotson was traded.

Interestingly, Igbinoghene is returning for the 2025 season, having again signed to play with the Commanders. Consequently, he has apparently agreed not to wear No. 1 next season.

Deebo Samuel was traded by the 49ers to the Commanders for a fifth-round draft choice. Samuel wore No. 1 in his final season (2024) with the 49ers after wearing No. 19 during the 2019 through 2023 seasons in San Francisco. Samuel actually wore No. 1 in college, playing for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Samuel was drafted in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft at 36th overall.

In an interesting apparent coincidence, Igbinoghene and Samuel wore No. 19 before choosing to switch to No. 1. Igbinoghene with Dallas wore No. 19, and Samuel with the 49ers.

There is not much history of a successful Washington player wearing No. 1. Here are the most notable Washington players who wore No. 1.

    • Matt Turk (1995-99) Punter: achieved the most success wearing No. 1
    • Jahan Dotson (2022-23) Receiver
    • Reggie Roby (1993-94) Punter
    • DeAndre Carter (2021) Receiver
    • Noah Igbinoghene (2024) Cornerback
