Commanders sign ex-Broncos quarterback; Vikings add ex-Denver QB

    -

A pair of former Denver Broncos backup quarterbacks appeared on the NFL’s transaction wire this week.

First, the Washington Commanders signed Jeff Driskel after shutting down Jayden Daniels and losing Marcus Mariota to injury. DC signed Driskel off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad, and he’s expected to provide depth behind Josh Johnson if Mariota is not able to play this week. The Commanders also have Sam Hartman on their practice squad. Driskel, 32, was a backup in Denver in 2020, going 0-1 as a fill-in starter.

Second, the Indianapolis Colts waived quarterback Brett Rypien, who had been serving as QB3 behind Philip Rivers and Riley Leonard while Anthony Richardson was on injured reserve. Rypien, 29, spent the first four years of his career with the Broncos, going 2-1 as a fill-in starter. Rypien was promptly claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Vikings, who lost J.J. McCarthy to injury this week.

Elsewhere on the ex-Bronco front, guard Netane Muti was cut from the Detroit Lions’ practice squad, the Los Angeles Chargers signed running back Royce Freeman to their practice squad and the New England Patriots cut practice squad offensive lineman Sebastian Gutierrez.
