During Monday’s training camp press conference, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Gardner Minshew discussed his adjustment to the offensive game plan and backing up Patrick Mahomes.
“I love the way they teach it here, man. I think between (Offensive Coordinator) Coach (Matt) Nagy, (Quarterbacks) Coach (David) Girardi in our room, (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid, obviously.” said Minshew, “They communicate very well on like, potential looks that you can get, how the play might adjust on the fly, and really give the guys the opportunity to go play ball and be successful. So that’s been a lot of fun.”
In relief of Mahomes, Minshew scored a rushing touchdown on Saturday in his Chiefs debut. He described his mentality as the same as during his starter days with other teams.
“The same man every day you’re out here to get better,” said Minshew, “It’s for the coaches to do the competition, for them to take stats, to figure out. It’s just getting out there and getting better with every rep, trying to learn not to make the same mistakes and push myself in the ways the coaches ask me to push myself.”
Last season with the Las Vegas Raiders, Minshew played in ten games and made nine starts, finishing with a completion percentage of 66.3 for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
