New England Patriots rookie wide receiver Efton Chism’s football future might be guaranteed even if things don’t work out in the NFL.
The BC Lions of the Canadian Football League have added the undrafted rookie wideout to their negotiation list. Each CFL team has compiled a list of 45 players with exclusive negotiating rights. One of those 45 players listed for the Lions is the former Eastern Washington standout receiver.
Chism finished his collegiate run with 120 receptions for 1,311 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. While he has yet to practice in pads with the Patriots, he has looked like one of the more impressive receivers in the early spring practices.
It will be an uphill battle making a roster with 12 players currently competing for a spot. The Patriots added Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins in free agency, along with drafting rookie third-round pick Kyle Williams. Demario Douglas, Kendrick Bourne and Kayshon Boutte will be returning after serving as three of the more reliable receiving targets last season.
The team also has second-year wideouts Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, who are both in sink-or-swim situations.
With that said, Chism has consistently created separation and made plays in competitive team periods. He’s going to be hard to keep off the field if he continues to play well in training camp.
Few positions, if any, will be more competitive and fun to watch than wide receiver for the Patriots this summer.
