Can Zach Charbonnet overtake Kenneth Walker III in Seahawks backfield?

    -

The Seattle Seahawks plan to field a run-heavier offense in 2025. New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is placing more responsibility in his backfield. That means it’ll be a multi-man effort due to the sheer volume alone.

Starting running back Kenneth Walker III has missed multiple games in recent seasons with recurring injuries. His history is concerning when it comes to Seattle running the football more frequently in 2025. That could lead to increased opportunities for Zach Charbonnet.

Walker was a non-participant physically at OTAs and minicamp. Head coach Mike Macdonald had said Walker was dealing with an ankle injury that limited his involvement. His health and participation at training camp will be worth monitoring closely throughout July and August.

Walker rushed for just 573 yards in 12 regular-season appearances in 2024. He averaged a lackluster 3.7 yards per carry behind a below-average offensive line. It’s worth noting Charbonnet averaged 4.2 yards behind that same offensive line. Charbonnet also scored a team-high nine touchdowns.

If Walker isn’t careful or healthy, Charbonnet could replace him as Mike Macdonald’s lead back this season.

Kenny McIntosh and Damien Martinez are also in the mix. Rookie seventh-rounder Martinez is especially intriguing and will be anxious to get involved in the backfield rotation. Charbonnet was an underrated weapon in Seattle’s offense last season and he could see increased volume in 2025.
