Bengals discussed trading for Eagles backup QB before acquiring Flacco

Cincinnati reportedly had trade interest in Eagles quarterback Sam Howell

Before pulling off a trade for Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco on Tuesday, the Cincinnati Bengals reportedly explored deals with the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the Bengals had “chatter” about pursuing QBs Sam Howell and Drew Lock.

“I’m told that neither of the Giants veterans, Russell Wilson or Jameis Winston, were ever real possibilities, nor was Atlanta’s Kirk Cousins. There was some chatter about Drew Lock in Seattle, Sam Howell in Philadelphia, guys like that. But teams aren’t eager to trade from their QB depth,“ wrote Graziano.

Howell and Lock are both young quarterbacks who could have contributed immediately and served as long-term backups to Joe Burrow. However, their upside likely drove up the asking price.

The Eagles acquired Howell from the Minnesota Vikings in August to be their third quarterback, and Howie Roseman is never quick to surrender depth at that position. Howell served as Jalen Hurts’ backup in Week 1 when Tanner McKee was dealing with a thumb injury.
