Bears lose K Jake Moody to the Commanders

    -

Chicago Bears kicker Jake Moody’s signature moment of the 2025 season came against the Washington Commanders back in October. Now, he gets the opportunity to become their starting kicker for the rest of the season.

According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Commanders are signing Moody off the Bears’ practice squad after releasing Matt Gay, who missed two field goal attempts in a loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Moody was picked up by the Bears after he was waived from the San Francisco 49ers for missing multiple field goal opportunities in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He was pressed into duty in Week 6 against the Commanders when Cairo Santos suffered a thigh injury. Moody became the hero of the game, converting four of five field goals, including the game-winning kick as time expired for the 25-24 victory.

The 2023 third-round pick had another chance to fill in for Santos and drilled all four field goal attempts in the Bears’ Week 7 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Moody reverted back to the practice squad when Santos returned but now has a new home.

Throughout the last few weeks, fans have raised the possibility of Moody taking over Santos due to his stronger leg. Those rumblings were amplified after Santos missed a field goal opportunity on Sunday before nailing the game winner against the Minnesota Vikings. The Bears feel comfortable with Santos, however, and weren’t willing to make any sort of change. Moody’s field goal percentage this season between the Bears and 49ers is 75%, while Santos has made 80% of his field goals, his lowest percentage since rejoining the Bears in 2020.
