Barcelona have already requested membership in EFC after leaving Super League

    -

The Super League project is finally no more. Real Madrid have recently announced they have reached an agreement with UEFA and European Football Clubs (EFC) surrounding their dispute over the project.

The new deal will see Real Madrid work with UEFA for the betterment of football, effectively meaning the death of the Super League project.

Barcelona have had a key role to play in this whole scenario, as their exit from the Super League project left Real Madrid with no support.

A key reason behind Barça’s decision to break away from the project was the sheer strength of the EFC, which has played a critical role in strengthening UEFA. And now, it appears Barcelona want to be a part of EFC too.

Barcelona have already applied for membership

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have already applied for membership in EFC, a process that was triggered automatically after the club decided to break away from the Super League project.

The EFC, which is de facto represented by PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, would give Barcelona special immunity and favour from UEFA.

This is something former president Joan Laporta has been keen on, as the club, despite initially supporting the Super League project, have formally recognised the efforts made by UEFA to improve the Champions League.

The introduction of a new format is a testament to that commitment. Barcelona, therefore, have no more business with the Super League – something they have made clear through their recent dialogues.

The club now share an excellent relationship with key EFC heads, including PSG. The same doesn’t apply for Real Madrid, which had earlier antagonised UEFA through their constant support for the Super League.
