The Kyler Murray era in Arizona is over.
The Cardinals are set to release the quarterback on the first day of the new league year next week, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Murray confirmed the news on social media, too, and apologized for failing during his seven seasons in Arizona.
The Cardinals already owe Murray $36.8 million in guaranteed money in 2026. Releasing Murray before March 15 gets them out of another $19.5 million that would have been triggered for the 2027 campaign.

The 28-year-old quarterback would get a change of scenery after throwing for a career-low 962 yards, 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions last season with the Cardinals. Murray played in five games before missing the remainder of the season with a foot injury.

Murray’s career has been marred by injuries and limited playoff experience. He finished his Cardinals career with 87 starts and a 38-48-1 record after being drafted with the No. 1 pick in 2019. He appeared in one playoff game and was named to one Pro Bowl over seven NFL seasons. He has also missed 30 games in his professional career due to various injuries.
In Murray’s absence, Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett excelled last season. Brissett threw for a career-high 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He is under contract for next season.

New Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur could also acquire a quarterback who more closely fits his system. Arizona has reportedly been linked to free agent Jimmy Garoppolo, who previously played under LaFleur with the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers
