6 things to know about Alfred Collins

    -

The San Francisco 49ers added another defensive linemen in the NFL draft when they selected University of Texas defensive tackle Alfred Collins.

Collins is 23-years old and measured in at 6-5, 332-pounds with 34 5/8-inch arms at the NFL combine. While we’ll cover him plenty on the field, here are a handful of things to know about San Francisco’s latest draft pick:

    Comes from athletic family

Collins’ mother, Benita, played college basketball at the University of Texas. His older sister Kennedy also played college basketball at Houston Baptist after scoring more than 1,000 points in high school, per the Athletic.

    Speaking of family…

A member of Collins’ extended family was also drafted by the 49ers. His cousin, Trent Brown, was a seventh-round selection by San Francisco in the 2015 draft. Last season was his 10th in the NFL. He also spent time with the New England Patriots, Las Vegas Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals. During his lone season in Vegas he was named to a Pro Bowl.

    2-sport star

Football wasn’t Collins’ only standout sport in high school. He averaged 11.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game across four seasons on the basketball team. That helps explain his quick first step and footwork at his size.

    First-round ranked

According to Dane Brugler, the only defensive end ahead of Collins in the 2020 recruiting class was Seattle Seahawks 2023 first-round pick Byron Murphy, who also went to UT.

    Lifetime Longhorn

Collins chose the University of Texas in part because he grew up a fan of the Longhorns thanks to his mom’s ties to the school from her college basketball career. He made the most of his time at Texas, playing 62 games across five seasons.
