    Dr Vinay Dhir, Chairman of the Institute of Digestive & Liver Care, S.L. Raheja Hospital, Mumbai, says, “The bowel works best when the mornings have a familiar flow and are planned. After you wake up, your digestive system naturally becomes active and ready to clear out the previous day’s waste. It’s your body’s way of hitting the reset button. But when you’re rushing, skipping breakfast, scrolling through your phone before even getting out of bed, or constantly changing your wake-up time, your gut loses the cues it depends on.” The result? Constipation, irregular movements, heaviness and that uncomfortable “something’s not right” feeling.

    The good news is that your gut doesn’t need complicated rituals; it just needs consistency. Waking up at a similar time daily helps your body understand when it’s time to get moving.

    Dr Vinay Dhir says, “A glass of warm water, a few quiet minutes before the world demands your attention, and a simple, nourishing breakfast create a gentle rhythm that your gut can rely on. Over time, these habits teach your bowels to behave more predictably.”

    Sleep is another big player. When your body doesn’t rest well, digestion slows down, leaving you feeling sluggish and backed up in the morning. A regular sleep schedule is one of the kindest gifts you can give your gut.

    And then there’s stress. Dr Vinay Dhir says, “The gut and mind talk to each other constantly. When your morning starts in a panic, rushing for meetings, skipping meals, or feeling mentally overloaded, your gut tightens up too.” A few minutes of calm, whether it’s stretching, deep breathing, or simply enjoying your tea without multitasking, can make mornings much kinder on your gut.
