Say Goodbye to Store-Bought Chai Masala! Make Pure, Aromatic Tea Masala at Home in Just Minutes (Image-AI)
Tea is one of the most consumed beverages across India, especially in Gujarati households. From waking you up in the morning to refreshing you in the evening, a good cup of masala chai instantly boosts your mood and energy. But store-bought masala often compromises quality.
Most tea masalas available in shops or at roadside stalls often contain adulteration, artificial flavours or excessive sugar. But if you prepare a fresh, fragrant chai masala at home, it not only elevates the taste of your tea but also supports better health. Here’s an easy recipe to make yourself — along with its many benefits.
Why Homemade Tea Masala?
Homemade chai masala is pure and aromatic, and is also packed with medicinal properties. It enhances flavour, supports digestion and strengthens immunity – all while keeping your tea free from artificial additives.
Ingredients You Need to Make Tea Masala at Home
- Green cardamom (Elaichi) – 10–12
- Cloves (Laung) – 8–10
- Cinnamon (Taj) – 1 large stick (2–3 inches)
- Black pepper (Kali mirch) – 10–15
- Fennel seeds (Variyali) – 1 teaspoon
- Dry ginger (Sonth) – 1 teaspoon
- Nutmeg (Jaiphal) – ½ piece, grated
- Bay leaves (Tejpatta) – 2–3 (optional)
- Saffron (Kesar) – a few strands (optional)
All these spices are easily available and known for their therapeutic benefits. Together, they give chai a perfectly balanced aroma and flavour.
How to Make Tea Masala Powder?
Lightly roast the whole spices- On low heat, gently roast the cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, black pepper, and bay leaves for 1–2 minutes. Do not let them burn — the goal is only to remove moisture and enhance their aroma.
Cool completely- Transfer the roasted spices to a plate and allow them to cool fully. If you grind them while warm, the mixture may become moist.
Grind into a fine powder- Add the cooled spices to a mixer jar. Add dry ginger, fennel seeds, and grated nutmeg as well. Grind until you get a smooth, fine powder.
Sieve the powder (Optional)- If you prefer a very fine consistency, sieve the mixture through a small strainer.
Store properly- Transfer the masala to a clean, dry, airtight glass jar. It stays fresh and fragrant for 3–4 months without losing flavour.
How to Use Tea Masala?
While preparing tea, add just ¼ teaspoon of this masala to boiling water or milk.
Avoid adding too much, as the flavour may turn overpowering.
