Thousands of power strips sold on Amazon have been recalled over a risk of the product catching fire.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Thursday, warning that the CCCEI Power Strips do not contain “supplementary overcurrent protection.”
Without this safeguard, the power strips are at risk of catching fire if they are overloaded, the commission explained.
“The resulting fire can cause serious injury or death from smoke inhalation and burns,” the commission said.
China-based retailer Middle Way Electronics, which sells the recalled power strips, has received at least two reports of the product “sparking and melting,” according to the commission. As of Thursday, no fires or injuries have been reported.
More than 5,500 of the recalled power strips were sold on Amazon from April 2024 to this past January.
The power strips, which cost between $23 and $30, came with either a 6-foot, 10-foot or 15-foot power cord. The recalled product has six receptacles with individual on/off switches.
The Independent has reached out to Middle Way Electronics for comment.
Earlier this month, the Consumer Product Safety Commission warned of recalled steam cleaners potentially causing burns.
The Wagner 900 Series Power Steamers, sold on Amazon and at stores, including Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart and Target, were recalled over an issue with the attached hose.
“The attached hose can get excessively hot and the nozzle/gun can expel hot water during use and after the trigger is engaged, posing a serious burn hazard to consumers,” the commission warned.
About 700,000 steamers were recalled as Wagner received at least 156 reports of the hose getting too hot or the nozzle or gun shooting out hot water.
“This includes over 50 reported burn injuries to consumers’ arms, hands, feet, and face, many of which resulted in first- or second-degree burns,” the commission said.
