Every year, around 2 crore people across the world are diagnosed with cancer. Of these, 1 crore lose their lives. The figures ahead are even more alarming, as experts have warned that in the coming years, one in every five people will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime.
According to reports, in India too, nearly 10 lakh people die of cancer each year. A major issue is that most people are either unable to access proper cancer treatment or the disease is not detected in time. As a result, while half of those diagnosed with cancer in developed countries survive, the majority of patients in India, unfortunately, die after being diagnosed. This is why cancer continues to present itself in a particularly frightening form in India.
It’s a known fact that early detection significantly increases the chances of survival. An even better approach is to try to prevent cancer altogether. US-based doctor Saurabh Sethi, Professor of Medical Science at Harvard University, has shared on social media that eliminating just four items from your diet and replacing them with healthier alternatives can greatly reduce the risk of developing cancer.
What Are These Four Foods?
Sparkling Water Instead of Sweetened Beverages
Cold drinks, soda, packaged juices, and similar sugary beverages are now a common part of many people’s daily lives. Dr Saurabh Sethi recommends replacing these with sparkling water. He states that excessive consumption of sugary drinks has increased the risk of colon cancer, especially in younger people. Instead of these, consider switching to natural, traditional alternatives.
Non-Alcoholic Options Instead Of Cocktails
Dr Sethi explains that alcohol, in any form, is harmful to the body. Not even a single drop is considered safe for health. He strongly advises against alcohol consumption, especially for women. Instead, opt for juice, sherbet, or other non-alcoholic beverages that offer flavour without the risk.
Lean Protein Instead Of Red Meat
Multiple studies have shown that red meat significantly increases the risk of cancer. Red meat includes the flesh of large animals such as goat, pig, lamb, and mutton. Dr Sethi suggests replacing red meat with lean protein sources like chicken, fish, and poultry, which are considered healthier alternatives.
Whole Grains Instead Of Bread
In India, many people have adopted the habit of eating bread for breakfast. However, bread is made from refined flour, which is a processed product. Anything processed or refined is not ideal for long-term health. Regular consumption of such foods can lead to serious digestive issues and raise cancer risk. Instead, choose whole grain options like rotis made from jowar (sorghum), bajra (pearl millet), or ragi (finger millet), which are far more nutritious.
