    What is Ramadan?

Ramadan (Ramzan) is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month in Islam. It commemorates the revelation of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad.

The month lasts for 29 or 30 days depending on the lunar cycle and the sighting of the crescent moon.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast daily from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib), engage in increased prayers, charity (zakat), and spiritual reflection.

    What is Roza?

Roza refers to the daily fast observed during Ramadan.

From dawn to dusk, Muslims abstain from:

    • Eating and drinking
    • Smoking
    • Negative behaviour and sinful acts

Fasting is obligatory for healthy adult Muslims. Exemptions apply to the elderly, those who are ill, pregnant or nursing women, travellers, and young children.

The fast is not only physical but also spiritual — encouraging patience, discipline and compassion.

    Sehri and Iftar Explained

    Sehri (Suhoor)

Sehri is the pre-dawn meal consumed before the Fajr prayer. It is considered a blessed meal and helps sustain energy throughout the day of fasting.

    Iftar

Iftar is the evening meal at sunset to break the fast. Traditionally, the fast is broken with dates and water, followed by Maghrib prayers and dinner with family and community members.

Many mosques and organisations also host community iftar gatherings during the month.

Ramadan 2026 begins across India from February 19 following the crescent moon sighting. The holy month marks a period of fasting, prayer, charity and reflection observed by millions of Muslims across the country.
