Holi is known as the festival of colours and is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India. Everyone enjoys the festivities by applying colours on each other. However, these colours often contain various chemicals and impurities. Many people fail to take precautions before playing Holi, which can have adverse effects on their skin and hair. A dermatologist has shared some useful tips to protect the skin and hair from the harmful effects of these colours.
Skin Care Tips for Holi
Dermatologist Dr Jyoti Chauhan advised that before playing Holi, one should massage the skin with ice, as this helps close open pores. This prevents dirt from entering the skin and reduces the chances of developing pimples.
She further suggested applying a good moisturiser after using ice. Alternatively, almond oil can be used, as it is rich in vitamin E, which acts as a protective barrier between the skin and colours, preventing them from sticking.
As Holi is often played in the afternoon, prolonged sun exposure can cause tanning. To avoid this, applying a good sunscreen before stepping out is essential.
Hair Care Tips for Holi
Colours can make hair extremely dry. To protect it, Dr Chauhan recommended washing the hair and applying coconut oil before playing Holi. Tying the hair properly can also help prevent colours from seeping in too deeply, making it easier to wash them off later.
She also advised wearing full-sleeved clothing to minimise direct contact between the skin and colours. Furthermore, it is crucial to use natural colours instead of chemical-based ones, as the latter can be harmful.
