The White House marked the start of the holiday season on December 1 with Melania Trump revealing this year’s Christmas decorations. It is the family’s first Christmas back in the White House since 2020, and the theme chosen this year is “Home is where the heart is.”
Dozens of volunteers helped put the display together, filling the building with classic decorations and detailed setups that stretch across the State Floor.
The White House shared the scale of the work: 75 wreaths, 51 Christmas trees, more than 700 feet of garland, 2,000 strands of lights, 25,000 feet of ribbon, 2,800 gold stars, 10,000 butterflies, and about 120 pounds of gingerbread.
The décor, selected by Melania Trump, is meant to reflect American traditions and also acknowledge the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. “These moments remind us that the heart of America is strong,” the White House said in a statement released with the unveiling.
Social Media Users React To The Festive Makeover
People online reacted quickly to the new decorations, with many praising the look and tone. A user wrote, “Sure is nice to have Class at the White House again!”
Another said, “Funny how Christmas décor can make even the most serious places look almost human again.”
Some comments were more direct: “Thank you for bringing dignity and class back to the White House,” a person said.
Another added, “I’m so happy to see the White House decorated with class and beauty again.”
A few compared the display to previous years, calling the 2025 setup “Stunningly beautiful! Wholesome, traditional and American, unlike the literal circus theme from last year.”
Decor Setup Changes After East Wing Demolition
The Christmas walkthrough inside the White House has reportedly changed this year because the East Wing was demolished in October as part of President Donald Trump’s ongoing renovation plans. With construction underway, staff had to redirect the visitor route and reorganise parts of the display.
The main Christmas tree, usually placed in the Blue Room, has also been given a special role as a tribute to Gold Star families. The Associated Press reported that trees in the East Room feature red, white, and blue ornaments topped with golden eagles, fitting the America250 theme.
The Blue Room tree includes ornaments showing each state’s bird and flower. In the Green Room, large portraits of George Washington and Donald Trump made from more than 6,000 Lego puzzle pieces are on display. The Red Room features thousands of blue butterflies inspired by Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future initiative.
Nearby, the gingerbread White House in the State Dining Room shows the South Portico and part of the Yellow Oval Room. According to the Associated Press, pastry chefs used 120 pounds of gingerbread, 100 pounds of pastillage, and nearly 15 pounds of chocolate and icing to build it.
