You are probably living under the rocks, if you did not come across an Instagram reel showcasing the easy recipe of the viral Japanese cheesecake. However, here’s the plot twist, the now viral dessert is neither authentically Japanese nor actually a cheesecake.
The real Japanese cheesecake is a fluffy, souffle-style baked dessert. It is airy, delicate and cheesecakey, born from Japanese bakers adapting Western cheesecakes into something lighter and less sweet.

Ingredients in the authentic Japanese cheesecake include eggs, cream, cheese, sugar, and butter.

Meanwhile, the viral Japanese cheesecake is not baked and there is no cream cheese in most recipes.

This is prepared using Greek Yogurt and biscuits. Method: You take a tub of thick Greek yogurt and jam biscuits into it, press them down and refrigerate. Ready!

The recipe has taken the social media by storm for being ridiculously easy – an overnight fridge dessert with no heat and no oven.

Why The Hype? Belgian caramelised biscuit has been elevated by social media into the matcha of 2025s trending flavours: Biscoff spreads, Biscoff ice creams, etc.

Here’s how to make the original Japanese Cheesecake!

Ingredients: Butter, cream cheese, milk, egg yolk, flour, corn-starch, egg whites, granulated sugar, hot water, powdered sugar and strawberries for garnishing.

Preheat the oven and melt butter, cream cheese, and milk in a pot until smooth; set aside to cool.

Whisk egg yolks in a bowl, then gradually mix in the cooled cream cheese mixture. Sift in flour and cornflour, whisking until lump-free.

Beat egg whites separately, add sugar gradually, and gently fold into the yolk mixture.

Pour batter into a lined cake pan, place in a water bath, bake for 35 minutes, then garnish with powdered sugar and strawberries.
