Ever heard of a country that fits entirely inside one city? Here’s the only one that does.

This destination is renowned for its high GDP per capita, diverse culture, and strategic location.

Among the 195 recognised countries in the world, most are made up of many cities, towns and regions. However, there’s one exception, a nation that exists entirely within a single city’s boundaries.

We are talking about Singapore, the only place in the world that is both a city and a country. Officially known as the Republic of Singapore, it operates as a single city and a sovereign nation that manages its government, economy and citizens from one centralised location.

Which Is The Only City That Is Also A Country?

Singapore is a city-state, which means it’s a single city that functions as an independent nation. Unlike other countries, it has no separate states or provinces. The entire territory is managed under one central government. This unique setup enables Singapore to maintain high efficiency, strong governance and balanced development across the nation.

    The Geographical Location

Singapore is located between Malaysia to the north and Indonesia to the south, surrounded by the Johor Strait and the Singapore Strait. It spans approximately 734 square kilometres. Despite its small size, its strategic location makes it a global trading hub that connects the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. Singapore is also known for its tropical rainforest climate, with warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year.

    Government and Independence

The country gained independence on August 9, 1965, after parting ways with Malaysia. It has a parliamentary system of government, led by a Prime Minister and overseen by a President as head of state.

    Economic Importance

One of the richest nations in the world, Singapore has one of the highest GDP per capita. Singapore’s economy depends on key sectors such as finance, trade, technology, manufacturing and shipping. The Port of Singapore ranks among the busiest in the world, while Changi Airport remains one of the best globally. The nation’s economic policies, transparency, and strong international partnerships have established it as a financial powerhouse in Asia.

    Diverse Culture And Language

Singapore has a diverse cultural landscape, where Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian communities all live together peacefully. The country has four official languages, English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. English is the main language for business, education and administration.

    The Lion City

The name Singapore comes from the Malay words “Singa” (lion) and “Pura” (city), meaning Lion City. It is believed that a prince from Sumatra saw a lion when he first arrived on the island, which inspired him to decide the city’s name and emblem.

The lion symbolises strength, courage and progress: qualities that have made Singapore a global leader in trade, technology and education.
