    Ramadan is a month of spiritual purification, self-discipline, and increased devotion. However, many people unknowingly adopt habits that can negatively impact their fast and overall health.

    Here are common mistakes to avoid during the holy month.

    Skipping Suhoor

    Some people skip Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) due to sleep or just drink water before fasting, which is a major mistake. Suhoor is a Sunnah and essential for maintaining energy throughout the day. Fasting without Suhoor can lead to weakness, dizziness, and dehydration.

    Overeating at Iftar

    Breaking the fast with excessive food, particularly fried and spicy items, puts a strain on the stomach, leading to digestive issues and weight gain. A balanced and light meal is recommended for Iftar.

    Not Drinking Enough Water

    Many people do not drink enough water during Suhoor and Iftar, leading to dehydration throughout the day. Excessive tea or coffee intake can also contribute to dehydration. It is crucial to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water daily.

    Sleeping Excessively

    Sleeping too much during the day and staying awake all night is a common habit in Ramadan, which negatively affects health. A balanced sleep schedule is necessary for maintaining both physical and mental alertness.

    Consuming Unhealthy Foods at Suhoor and Iftar

    Relying on processed foods, fried items, and overly spicy dishes can cause digestive problems. Instead, it is better to consume protein-rich foods, fibre, fruits, yoghurt, and vegetables for better digestion and energy.

    Sleeping Immediately After Iftar

    Going to bed right after Iftar can lead to digestive issues such as acid reflux and indigestion. A short walk or light activity after eating is advisable.

    Arguing, Anger, and Using Harsh Language

    Fasting is not just about abstaining from food but also about improving behaviour. Anger, quarrelling, and harsh speech should be avoided, and patience, forgiveness, and kindness should be practised.

    Excessive Consumption of Caffeinated Drinks

    Too much tea, coffee, or soft drinks can cause dehydration, as caffeine reduces water retention in the body. It is better to consume fresh juices, lemon water, and plenty of plain water instead.

    Neglecting Exercise

    Some people stop exercising completely during Ramadan, while others make the mistake of engaging in intense workouts while fasting. Light exercises or walking after Iftar can be beneficial for maintaining physical health.

    By avoiding these mistakes, individuals can have a healthier and more spiritually fulfilling Ramadan.
