Barry Williams and Maureen McCormick played onscreen step-siblings in the popular sitcom The Brady Bunch but offscreen their relationship was a lot more complicated.
Decades after the final episode went to air, Williams has shared that he had an “on-again, off-again” romance with McCormick.
Williams spoke with his former costar Christopher Knight, who played Peter Brady in the show, about his connection with McCormick on an episode of The Real Brady Bros podcast which aired as a re-run this week.

While discussing one of the show’s most popular episodes The Subject Was Noses, Knight and Williams got onto the topic of McCormick’s character Marcia’s dating life.
In the famous episode, which first aired in 1973, Marcia has her nose broken after Knight’s Peter throws a football at her face. It results in Marcia’s date cancelling on her.
Williams commented that Marcia had a confusing dating life, adding, “she had kind of a secret life going on there for a while”.

Knight quickly shifted the conversation from Marcia’s fictional life to Maureen’s personal connection with Williams.
“You’re conflating Maureen and Marcia,” Knight posited.
“It did look like she was dating somebody very close to her on the set, judging from the relationship that I was witnessing between the two of you during the show,” he said.
“Yes, you two were looking a little bit close, a little bit less like brother and sister,” he added.
Knight continued explaining that Williams appeared to have a “longing kind of wide-eyed” expression for Marcia while “she was looking dreamy”.

Williams shared that Knight’s observation was pretty much on the money.
“It was sort of like on-again, off-again with Maureen and I throughout the years,” he said.
“There was always a little dance being played that was broken up by hiatus.”

Later in the podcast episode, Williams shared that even though he had fond feelings for Maureen, he made an effort to keep things professional on set.
“When she was pretending to be affectionate with other guys and going out on dates and stuff, I liked to just stay out of the way and let her for her job,” he said.
However, he felt the need to be nearby when McCormick had a romantic scene with another actor to “have a presence”.

Williams and McCormick weren’t the only ones to have eyes for each other on The Brady Bunch set, according to the actor.
“We all hooked up with each other at some point,” he told US Weekly last year.
“I dated Maureen [McCormick], and Chris [Knight] dated Eve [Plum] and Michael [Lookinland] and Susan [Olsen] had a little mock wedding at one point. So, yes, we all hooked up,” he added.
