I haven’t been a huge fan of Sydney Sweeney, until now! That’s because I saw an early screening of Christy and I’m here to say, Sweeney delivers a knock out performance as Christy in the boxing biopic.
About Sydney Sweeney’s Role In The Movie Christy
Christy is a biographical sports drama film about former professional boxer Christy Martin. In the lead role, Sweeney chronicles Martin’s rise to become America’s most well known female boxer in the 1990s. There’s much more to the story but, if you’re like me and you aren’t familiar with her story, I recommend going into this film blind. I had no idea about how the movie would end and I feel that made the story that much better.
The film first premiered at Toronto Film Fest, but I saw the flick at the Austin Film Fest with Christy Salters (formerly Martin) in attendance (she now lives in Austin, Texas). When asked about what it was like to see her life on screen, the West Virginia native said, “I truly am a coal miner’s daughter from a small town of about 700 people. We don’t even have a stop sign, much less a stop light. So, to see my life up here is just overwhelming.”

Salters went on to explain what it’s like to have Sweeney portray her. “And then, it’s like, the it girl Sydney Sweeney is playing me. That’s pretty crazy,” Martin exclaimed.
Personally, I think this is Sweeney’s best work yet. I love when we get to see a young person really hit their stride early on in their career. This “it girl” is taking big swings and it’s paying off. It’s likely we will see her nominated for a Golden Globe come awards season – and perhaps an Oscar as well.
Though Sweeney did not attend the Austin Film Fest, she appeared at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival mere days later where she received the Spotlight Award for her work on the film.
You can see Christy in theaters starting on November 7, 2025.
