Sydney Sweeney’s new film has had a great opening weekend at the box office after a string of her latest films didn’t do as well as hoped.
Sweeney’s R-Rated thriller The Housemaid, also starring Amanda Seyfried, has made $US19 million ($28 million) at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.
The psychological thriller, which is based on the best-selling book The Housemaid by Freida McFadden, is directed by Paul Feig.
The film has broken a string of box office misses for Sweeney after her most recent films, Americana, Eden and Christy failed to captivate audiences.
In her newest project, Sweeney plays Millie, a troubled woman who begins working as a live-in housekeeper for a wealthy, seemingly perfect couple, played by Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar.
What starts as a job quickly spirals into a dangerous game of manipulation, obsession, sexual tension, and deception.
The film is rated R due to “strong bloody violence, gore, language, sexuality/nudity and drug use,” the Motion Picture Association said.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at the premiere, Sweeney was nonchalant about the possibility of a sequel.
“‘I think that we’ll just have to wait and see,” she said ahead of the film’s opening weekend.
“I hope that the audience loves the movies just like we love the books, and we can continue to hopefully share that love within more of the films.”
The film has been well received by critics, with the movie scoring a 75 per cent audiece score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie’s critics’ score was even higher at 92 per cent.
Earlier this week, Sweeney made headlines after showing up the Los Angeles premiere of the film in a jaw-dropping low-cut dress.
Her halterneck dress with a ruched fitted bodice flowed into a billowing feather-trimmed skirt that trailed behind her as she walked the red carpet.
The Euphoria star completed her old-Hollywood look with a bold red lip and wore her blonde hair in loose waves.
Her co-star Seyfried also made an appearance at the premiere, opting for a sparkling red look in stark contrast to Sweeney’s gown.
Seyfried’s cocktail-style dress appeared to drape around her waist and fell to her knees with an asymmetrical skirt.
She completed the look with strappy heels and a statement necklace.
