Over the weekend, thousands of people waltzed through Sydney and Brisbane sporting bald caps, badly drawn-on beards and a pair of aviators.
I am proud to say I was one of them.
We did so for one reason and one reason only. The man, myth, and legend that is Pitbull was in town, and it’s now become almost customary to dress up as the artist while attending one of his gigs thanks to a social media trend.
If you’re unaware of the talents of this man, you’re missing out. He’s the American rapper, singer and songwriter known globally as Mr Worldwide, and he sings some absolute belter anthems such as Fireball, Hotel Room Service and Timber.
The 44-year-old, whose real name is Armando Christian Perez, has sold more than 100 milllion singles and 25 million albums. Basically, he’s a bloody legend.
He was the soundtrack to many millenials’ younger years, his songs blasting as we downed Jägerbombs in a nightclub we wouldn’t dream of going in now.
Pitbull was the second headlining act on the line-up for R&B Festival Fridayz Live, with Mariah Carey topping the bill at Sydney’s ENGIE Stadium and Brisbane’s Showgrounds.

The night before the concert, I felt like a kid waiting for Christmas morning.
My shirt was ironed. My bald cap, which I’d ordered weeks in advance, was hanging on a hook beside my bed. I dozed off listening to Pitbull anthems, butterflies in my stomach as I waited for the day to arrive.
Then it did.
Myself and three girlfriends decided to kick off the day at a bottomless brunch, and walked into the venue committed to the cause in full Pitbull attire.
Within minutes we came face-to-face with a plethora of Pitbull lookalikes dancing through the streets of Sydney, running over and sharing hugs in excitement as passers-by screamed his lyrics to us.
People begged us to take photos with them like we were the real Mr Worldwide. It was chaos.
Every corner you turned, another bald cap. I attended Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour similarly dressed in Swift-style glittery attire, but the ridiculousness of this made it even more spectacular.
When we got to the venue, the atmosphere was insane as he took to the stage.
“To all the baldies out there, if you put on the bald cap, you’ve come to have the time of your life,” Pitbull screamed to the crowd of thousands, and we all lapped it up.
He blasted out his hits one by one. At one stage my friend lifted me on her shoulders, her bald cap slipping in front of her face so she couldn’t see a damn thing while I screamed out the lyrics.
But it was… magical.
Everyone was going wild. Screaming, dancing, shouting – the most fun you could ever have at a gig.
I almost felt bad for Mariah Carey having to headline to a sea of bald heads, many of whom had only come to see Pitbull. But she did nail it regardless, and her singing All I Want For Christmas to the masses is an absolute scene I’ll never forget.
This weekend it was Sydney and Brisbane that saw a bald cap takeover, but next weekend it’s Melbourne and Perth’s turn to lap up the glory.
If you’re heading out to see him next weekend, I need you to get in the spirit. This is what social media was built for.
Grab a bald cap and dance like your life depends on it – you will, as Pitbull says, have the time of your life.
