New York City violence: Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Stuhlbarg attacked near Central Park by rock-wielding man

    -

Boardwalk Empire star Michael Stuhlbarg was the victim of a seemingly random attack by a rock-wielding man in New York City, police have confirmed.

The 55-year-old actor – who played gangster Arnold Rothstein in the crime drama – was attacked on Sunday night (Monday in Australia) allegedly by a 27-year-old man in the back of the neck with a weapon, suffering an abrasion and other injuries.

That’s according to law enforcement, who confirmed to the New York Post the incident occurred near Central Park on the city’s Upper East Side, around three kilometres from where Stuhlbarg’s character in the HBO series was fatally shot.

It’s understood Stuhlbarg, who is also known for his role in Call Me By Your Name alongside Timothée Chalamet and the disgraced Armie Hammer, chased after the man who allegedly attacked him after the incident.

The alleged attacker was then apprehended by law enforcement, who had been stationed outside the Russian consulate at the time.

He was then taken into custody and charged with assault.

Stuhlbarg – who had bruising on his neck – reportedly declined medical assistance at the scene, according to law enforcement.

Witnesses to the incident alleged they saw the man pick up the rock before throwing it into a crowd of people, hitting Stuhlbarg.

Stuhlbarg has not publicly commented on the incident.

The incident is the latest in a slew of seemingly random – and violent – attacks in New York City, which has seen the National Guard deployed to subway stations.

Multiple women have warned each other on social media to stay aware of their surroundings after being punched in the face, attacks which have seen a 40-year-old man arrested.

Last week, a commuter was killed after being shoved onto the tracks in front of an oncoming subway train.
