Mariska Hargitay has announced a special new project close to her heart – directing and producing a new film about her late mother, Hollywood icon Jayne Mansfield.

Hargitay, 61, who is best known her work on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, said she feels “so proud” about the upcoming documentary film, titled My Mom Jayne.

Hargitay was just three years old when tragedy struck and her mother died in a car crash at the age of 34 in 1967.

She said the project “is a place of meeting” for her and her late mother.

Underneath a black and white picture of the pair together, which she shared on Instagram, she wrote: “I feel grateful, fulfilled and so proud to share this film.”

“I never got to make a movie with my mom, and she never got to make the kind of movies she wanted to make.”

“This movie is a labor of love and longing. It’s a search for the mother I never knew, an integration of a part of myself I’d never owned, and a reclaiming of my mother’s story and my own truth,” she reportedly said in a release about the project.
