Wake up, babe — there’s a new awkward moment between Kim Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian Barker to dissect.
This time, people are debating who was in the wrong during a conversation on the latest episode of The Kardashians.
In the episode, Kim was visiting Kourtney when she mentioned how someone had apparently put a hit out on her. Kourtney seemed genuinely surprised to hear that. “I never heard about that,” she said, before asking, “There’s a hit out on you?”
“Yeah, I had to change all my cars ’cause I couldn’t drive and I didn’t want my kids to think anything was weird,” Kim shared, adding that she eventually came to believe it was a scam. “We’re pretty sure that this person [in prison] just wanted a good standing with me from behind bars. Or maybe it was a conversation that was had. Like, ‘What would this cost?’ or ‘How do we do this?’ We have no idea.”
Instead of following up on what she said, Kourtney changed the subject entirely.
“Wait, have you ever had a date with butter inside and sea salt? It’s a really good snack,” she said, to which Kim replied, “No. But thanks for really supporting this deep conversation.”
Kourtney later explained that she interrupted Kim because she was “bored.”
“I get so bored talking about everyone and their stuff,” she said in a confessional. “I just don’t want to be rude, but I think it’s when you’re, like, a new mom and you have a younger baby…I just feel like I don’t relate to any of you, and I just want to go home.”
Many online thought Kourtney’s reaction was cold. “Even for Kourtney that was cold blooded,” one person said, while another called her “insufferable.”
Headlines have also largely focused on Kourtney’s response to Kim mentioning the hit, but the full context shows what happened beforehand.
At the start of the clip, Kim was visiting to look over redesigns for Kourtney’s house. The two were seen briefly reviewing plans, with Kourtney excitedly showing off the staging, when Kim interrupted to share the stress she had been dealing with.
“Oh my God,” she said, “I just did a Prenuvo scan and they’re like, ‘Everything looks great, but you have an aneurysm in your brain,’ and they’re like it’s been there for years.”
She explained that stress could cause it to rupture and went on to talk about all the stress she had been under, from the Met Gala to her Paris robbery trial and studying for the bar exam.
Kourtney listened and engaged, but as the conversation wound down, she went back to showing Kim designs before being interrupted by a notification on Kim’s phone.
“Do you like that?” she asked as a distracted Kim tapped away on her phone.
“You are so hard to focus,” Kourtney said. Kim snapped back, “I know, I got a lot of shit. This is my one day off from school a week.”
“Well, this is my one hour,” Kourtney replied, leading Kim to say, “I don’t even have time to do this for my own house. I’m lacking on my stuff. I have the Met Ball coming up, and I don’t even have my look ready, and it’s in two weeks, and I don’t even know what designer I’m going with, so I have a lot going on.”
Seemingly still trying to defend her inattentiveness, Kim mentioned the hit as another stressor in her life, leading to the earlier exchange above.
With that context, people thought Kim was being rude, which may explain Kourtney’s reaction.
One viewer said, “I get why she checked out and stopped caring. Kim was treating it like a one sided conversation and being selfish. She only wanted to talk about herself. So why should Kourtney continue to sit there and listen. She was over it.”
