The advertising for ‘Best Medicine’, the fictional Port Wenn, has started. The FOX Drama Club account published the first full trailer and revealed Dr. Martin Best, the character played by Josh Charles. He is an excellent surgeon from a big city who gets relocated to a small, odd place called Port Wenn, where he had spent summers as a kid. But the catch is that he has a huge secret, and he detests the slow, crazy lifestyle and the people there.
“In the trailer, Dr. Best is seen saying, ‘I am just here to do my job,’ while he is clearly showing his discontent and annoyance about the parades and similar events. He is also heard saying, ‘there is no way I am going to parties.’ The clips are portraying him confrontational with the locals, one of whom is Love Luisa, portrayed by Abigail Spencer, who seems to have a very different method of reaching him. The cast also includes Cree, Annie Potts, and Josh Zuckerman.
This is a very simple, old yet attractive storyline. “He came to this place to help others,” the narrator tells us. “But perhaps this town is the medicine he needs.” This very same method in the art of storytelling was responsible for the success of the UK original series which had Martin Clunes in the leading role and was on-air for more than ten years generating a huge international audience.
And those listeners had no doubts in weighing the announcement. The comment section became a site where the original fans and the new cast ones met again.
A user made the link right away, posting, “Oh the US version of Doc Martin. Huge shoes to fill! The original UK series with Martin Clunes was great & Clunes is a tough one to follow.” Nevertheless though, they did show eagerness for Josh Charles’s portrayal of the legendary character.
The casting of Josh Charles as the male lead emerged as the primary draw of the show. A whole bunch of comments were simply honoring the talented actor, one of them read, “Josh Charles is really one of the best actors around. He will turn this show into a fairy tale.” Another user was more physically reacting: “Would watch just because Josh Charles is 🔥.”
Audience’s liking towards the actor’s previous roles made an appearance again. Someone commented, “It’s going to be hard not to see Gardner, and every time I see josh charles I think of him,” referring to his role in The Good Wife. The other excited viewer shouted, “ITS KNOX OVERSTREET AND LUCY PRESTON,” mixing up his character from Dead Poets Society with Abigail Spencer’s from Timeless.
Overseas audience had similar expressions of discontent. A German fan asked, “When and where can I see this in Germany?? I just love the Trailer!” Another German user lamented, “I would be totally enchanted by Josh Charles in his new series… if only Germany let me see it! 😍” Someone responded with a bit of optimism, asserting that Hulu content may sometimes come through Disney+ in Germany, although it is usually after it has been aired in the US.
Not all comments were jubilant though. Some viewers were cautiously optimistically, one of them said, “I loved the British version so much. I hope this one is as good.” The issue of adapting such a celebrated series was certainly on their minds.
The official Hulu account even participated in the conversation to declare, “can’t wait to meet them!” This way, they provided a corporate seal of approval on the hype.

‘Best Medicine’ is relying on a captivating plot, a lead actor who can keep the audience coming back for more, and an already curious audience who wants to know about the alterations. Hence, it will be the character-driven, unique show in the FOX’s winter line up. People might not like the bizarre treatment of Port Wenn and the nicely comical aspect, but the prognosis can still be very optimistic already based on the early reactions.
