George and Amal Clooney’s children: Everything to know about twins Alexander and Ella, explained

    -

They’re the children of a Hollywood megastar and his human rights lawyer wife.

Despite famously declaring he would never again marry or have kids, George Clooney is now both a doting husband to wife Amal and father of their twins, Ella and Alexander.

But while the very private pair never share photos of their children’s faces, they have revealed quite a lot of information about their offspring over the years.

Clooney was a huge star by the time he met Amal Alamuddin at a charity dinner at his Lake Como home in July 2013, having famously sworn off marriage after his first union with actress Talia Balsam ended in divorce.

“I thought she was beautiful, and I thought she was funny and obviously smart,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017.

After exchanging texts and emails, they met in London three months later for their first date.

Clooney proposed the following April and they wed in a star-studded ceremony in Venice, Italy, in September 2014.

Surprisingly, the actor told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017 he and Amal never once spoke about having kids before she raised the matter while they were on a walk about a year after they married.

During a 2021 appearance on the WTF with Marc Maron Podcast, Clooney said Amal suggested their luck “should be shared with some others”.

“I have to say, it was very emotional because I really was convinced that that wasn’t my life and was comfortable with that,” he said.

Amal fell pregnant soon after. They were at an ultrasound appointment in London when they learned they were having twins.

Clooney was 56 and Amal was 39 when Alexander and Ella were born one month early, on June 6, 2017, at St Mary’s Hospital in London – the birthplace of princes William and Harry, and the three Wales children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Alexander arrived two minutes before his sister.

Clooney told The Hollywood Reporter his first thoughts on welcoming the twins was “I hope I don’t screw this up”.

Amal told the publication she was initially surprised by “what a great father he is”, while Clooney revealed he even changed nappies.

Since then, Clooney and Amal have made a number of revelations about their twins, who are now eight.

    They speak three languages

During a 2022 appearance at the Royal School of Film and Television Production Magnet, Clooney said the twins, who were then five, could already speak three languages.

That same year, during an appearance on CBS Mornings, he said he and Amal had made a “terrible mistake” in regard to raising their kids.

“We taught them Italian. But we don’t speak Italian,” he said.

“So we’ve armed them with a language they can harm us with. And we both don’t really know what they’re saying.”

    They like heavy metal

During a 2023 appearance at the Clooney Foundation for Justice awards night, The Albies, Amal revealed the children were into heavy metal.

“He’s started playing heavy metal music, actually,” Amal said, per Access Hollywood, before Clooney chimed in.

They’re headbangers. It’s not fully heavy metal. It’s just heavy enough that they can bang their heads,” he said.

They also said both the children were musical, which makes sense, as Clooney’s aunt, Rosemary Clooney was a famed singer and actress.

    They have very different personalities

During a 2023 interview on Good Morning America, Clooney said they were very different.

“When you have twins and you’re raising [them] the same time, the same way, and they’re completely different human beings, you realise how little say you have in who they are,” he said.

“They come out with an opinion, and it’s amazing to watch how different my kids’ personalities are.”

In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, Clooney said the twins were “like night and day”: “Alexander loves to laugh and Ella’s very serious, always making sure everybody plays by the rules.”

They are not raised by nannies

During The Guardian interview, Clooney said they did not have a fulltime nanny.

“We don’t, because it’s so important to Amal,” he said.

“We have a nanny four days a week and the rest of the time it’s just us, and during lockdown it was just us for a full year!”

    Clooney’s career takes a backseat

During a 2024 interview with GQ, Clooney said he had turned away from directing films due to his kids.

“It is a year on the road to direct, and now my kids are of a certain age, we’re not going to uproot our kids out of school and run around,” he said.

“Before that, they could just come with us and we would all go. But that’s different now. So now I’m going to just probably focus on other things, like acting.”

    He drives them to school

In the same interview, he said he would take six months off after performing on Broadway to spend time with his kids.

“I’m going to give myself time with my kids. I really enjoy driving them to school… So I don’t want to lose all of that.”

    They love play-acting

During an interview with Esquire published in October, Clooney’s children burst into the room.

Alexander was dressed in a police uniform and he and his sister were “making a jail”.

They live on a farm in France

After bouncing between homes in the US, London and Italy, the family settled on a farm in the Provence region of France.

Clooney said it was to give their children a “much better life”.

“I was worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life,” he said.

“France – they kind of don’t give a shit about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”

They reportedly attend a local school.

    They do chores

Clooney said the children “are not on their iPads” and have to do chores, such as “take their dishes in” after they eat.

When a fence on the farm needed painting using a protective oil, he armed them with paint brushes and set them to work.

“And at first they’re taking these little, tiny brushstrokes, boop, boop, boop,” he told Esquire. “And I go, ‘Nooo, paint the goddamn fence.'”

    They don’t like Amal’s cooking

Clooney played host during the Esquire interview, which took place at their holiday home in Italy’s Lake Como, and lifted the metal lids off serving trays to announce what was underneath, causing Amal to quip, “And lucky for you, I didn’t cook any of it”.

In response, Clooney called out to his children, “Ella, Alexander. If Mama cooks, what happens?” to which they replied in unison: “We all die!”

They are kept out of the public eye

Both Clooney and Amal are trying to keep the children out of the public eye.

“I have a goal of trying to protect, I don’t want pictures of my kids,” Clooney told GQ.

“We deal in very serious subject matters, with very serious bad guys, and we don’t want to have photos of our kids out there.

”So we have to work hard at trying to stay private, and it’s tricky, as you can imagine.”

In July, Amal told Glamour they even go as far as collecting their guests’ phones when they visit their home, in part to protect their children.

“Creating private moments and spaces is becoming increasingly difficult,” she said.

“But that’s also why we entertain a lot at home. I now have a phone basket that I use to take everyone’s phones away.”

She said having children had led them to become “more troubled by some of the intrusions” in their lives.

“We do the best we can to minimise any impact on our children. We don’t put our children out there. We’ve never put their photo out there or anything like that,” she said.
